Marrakech first: for whom?
Choose Marrakech if you are:
- A first-time visitor to Morocco (Marrakech is the simplest entry point, most flights, most infrastructure)
- A thrill-seeker (quad, hot air balloon, Agafay desert 30 min away)
- A foodie (the best modern Moroccan restaurants are in Marrakech)
- A nightlife lover (the medina rooftops, Le Comptoir, Kabana)
- A photographer (Marrakech's light is magical, especially at dawn and sunset)
- A riad enthusiast (the most beautiful in the country are in Marrakech)
- A family traveler (more suitable activities, more pools)

- An epicurean (Fassi cuisine is the most refined in the country)
- A seeker of calm (Fez is much quieter than Marrakech)
Practical advantages:
- More authentic, fewer foreign tourists
- Crafts are cheaper (prices are less inflated for tourists)
- The Fez el-Bali medina is the only one in Morocco to have preserved its medieval way of life

If you have 7 days or more, do both. It's the perfect combination:
- 3 nights in Marrakech + 1 night in Agafay or Essaouira
- 2 nights in Fez + excursion to Chefchaouen and Volubilis
- Connection: domestic flight (45 min) or train (7h, beautiful landscapes)
If you have 5 days, choose Marrakech as a base, with a day trip to Fez (it's possible but tiring, ~7h train each way).
If you have 3 days, stay in Marrakech without hesitation.
