The Ouzoud falls drop 110 metres in three tiers into a gorge of the El-Abid river, in the Middle Atlas, 150 km from Marrakech. Switchback paths lead down to the pool, where small boats take you to the foot of the falls. Barbary macaques — the only monkeys in North Africa — live free in the olive trees.

  • Flow is strongest from March to June, after the Atlas snowmelt.
  • Down and back up is about 45 minutes each way on stone steps: not pushchair territory.
  • The macaques are wild and protected — they are not to be fed.
