The Moroccan Sahara reached from Marrakech is Erg Chebbi: a field of orange sand dunes rising to 150 metres beside the village of Merzouga, near the Algerian border. The drive is part of the trip — the Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou, the Dadès valley, the Todra gorges.

## Practical notes

- Two days is enough to see the dunes; three means you don't spend the trip in the car.
- Camp nights are cold from October to March — bring a fleece. Even in high summer the temperature drops after sunset.
- Sunrise over the erg is worth the 5am alarm: that is when the dunes turn red.
