Marrakech is where all our tours begin. Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids, the red city holds two worlds side by side: the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with Jemaa el-Fna square, the souks, the Koutoubia and the Bahia Palace; and Guéliz, the modern town inherited from the protectorate, with its galleries and terraces.

## Practical notes

- The medina is walked, not driven — the lanes are too narrow for a car.
- Jemaa el-Fna changes character at dusk: orange-juice stalls by day, open-air kitchens at night.
- Allow half a day for the Majorelle and Yves Saint Laurent gardens; they are busiest in the middle of the day.
