Eight regions, each with its own tours departing from Marrakech.

## Marrakech

Marrakech is where all our tours begin. Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids, the red city holds two worlds side by side: the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with Jemaa el-Fna square, the souks, the Koutoubia and the Bahia Palace; and Guéliz, the modern town inherited from the protectorate, with its galleries and terraces.

## Sahara & Merzouga

The Moroccan Sahara reached from Marrakech is Erg Chebbi: a field of orange sand dunes rising to 150 metres beside the village of Merzouga, near the Algerian border. The drive is part of the trip — the Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou, the Dadès valley, the Todra gorges.

## Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas starts 45 minutes from Marrakech and peaks at Toubkal, 4,167 m, the highest summit in North Africa. The Ourika, Imlil and Three Valleys routes string together terraced Berber villages, walnut groves, waterfalls and passes. It is the cool escape when the plain heats up.

## Essaouira

Essaouira is Morocco's Atlantic port: a fortified 18th-century medina listed by UNESCO, wind-beaten ramparts, a fleet of blue fishing boats and a steady trade wind that made it a kitesurfing spot. Three hours from Marrakech, it is the easiest seaside day to arrange.

## Fez

Fez holds Fès el-Bali, the largest car-free medina in the world and one of the best-preserved medieval cities anywhere, listed by UNESCO. Inside are the al-Qarawiyyin university, founded in 859, the Chouara tanneries and the Bou Inania madrasa. This is the country's spiritual and artisan capital.

## Agafay

Agafay is not a sand desert but a stone one: lunar hills of clay and shale 30 km from Marrakech, with the snow-topped Atlas behind. It is the desert feeling without the ten-hour drive — hence the tented dinners, the quad bikes and the balloons that lift off at first light.

## Ouzoud

The Ouzoud falls drop 110 metres in three tiers into a gorge of the El-Abid river, in the Middle Atlas, 150 km from Marrakech. Switchback paths lead down to the pool, where small boats take you to the foot of the falls. Barbary macaques — the only monkeys in North Africa — live free in the olive trees.

## Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen, the blue city, clings to the foothills of the Rif at 600 metres. Founded in 1471, it owes its colour to walls repainted with indigo-tinted lime. People come for the medina, Outa el-Hammam square and the view from the Spanish mosque at sunset.
