Fez holds Fès el-Bali, the largest car-free medina in the world and one of the best-preserved medieval cities anywhere, listed by UNESCO. Inside are the al-Qarawiyyin university, founded in 859, the Chouara tanneries and the Bou Inania madrasa. This is the country's spiritual and artisan capital.

## Practical notes

- Fez is about 8 hours' drive from Marrakech: it belongs in a multi-day tour, not a day trip.
- The tanneries are viewed from the terraces of the leather merchants; the sprig of mint they hand you is not a gimmick.
- The medina has thousands of lanes — a local guide is not a luxury, it is what makes the visit legible.
