Essaouira is Morocco's Atlantic port: a fortified 18th-century medina listed by UNESCO, wind-beaten ramparts, a fleet of blue fishing boats and a steady trade wind that made it a kitesurfing spot. Three hours from Marrakech, it is the easiest seaside day to arrange.

- It runs 8–10 °C cooler than Marrakech and it is windy most days — bring a jacket.

- The road crosses the argan groves; the tree grows nowhere else in the world.
