The High Atlas starts 45 minutes from Marrakech and peaks at Toubkal, 4,167 m, the highest summit in North Africa. The Ourika, Imlil and Three Valleys routes string together terraced Berber villages, walnut groves, waterfalls and passes. It is the cool escape when the plain heats up.

## Practical notes

- Temperature drops around 6 °C per 1,000 m of altitude: what is punishing in Marrakech is pleasant in Imlil.
- The Setti Fatma waterfalls are reached on foot over sometimes-slippery rock — closed shoes are not optional.
- In winter the passes can be snowed in; the route is adjusted on the day according to road conditions.
