Agafay is not a sand desert but a stone one: lunar hills of clay and shale 30 km from Marrakech, with the snow-topped Atlas behind. It is the desert feeling without the ten-hour drive — hence the tented dinners, the quad bikes and the balloons that lift off at first light.

## Practical notes

- Visit Agafay late in the day: raking light sculpts the hills and the heat drops.
- It is a mineral landscape, not dunes. If you came for Erg Chebbi, you need Merzouga.
- Nights are cool year-round because of the altitude and the lack of vegetation.
